FP1 The
Sanctuary of Caravaggio (25 Km from
Bergamo. Half day).
Impressive sanctuary visited by millions of
visitors every year. The sanctuary was built on the spot where Our Lady appeared
on May 26th, 1432 to Giovanna Varoli, a native peasant. From within the land a
miraculous source gushed out: nowadays the Holy Source is found just below the
High Altar, at the feet of the statue of Our Lady.
FP2 The
Sanctuary of Cornabusa (25 Km from Bergamo. Half day. Closed October thru Easter).
Found in a cave at the end of an inaccessible road, the
Sanctuary contains a beautiful and miraculous statue of Our Lady of the Sorrows,
dating back to the XIV Century. The statue comes probably from Tuscany and might
have been hidden in the cave during the fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines
in the second half of same XIV Century. FP3 The

Visits to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of
the Fields, in Stezzano (celebrating an apparition of the Holy Virgin, in the
XII Century), to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Basella in Urgnano (apparition of
the Holy Virgin, 1356), to the Sanctuary of Our Lady in Caravaggio (apparition
of the Holy Virgin and birth of a miraculous source, 26 May 1432 - over 1½
million pilgrims every year), and to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Tears in
Treviglio (containing a miraculous holy picture who grieved over the siege of
the French troops in 1522). FP4 The

Visit of Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, where the beloved Pope
John XXIII was born, with the farmstead birthplace called the Palazzo and the Ca’
Maitino, where he stayed for long time when he was Bishop and then Cardinal, and
where memorabilia and relics are preserved. Visit of the Abbey of St. Giles with
the grave of Teoperga (built starting from 1080), to the Basilica of St. James
in Pontida, venue of the famous Oath of the Alliance of Lombard Communes (Lega
Lombarda, April 7th, 1167) and of the ancient Romanic Rotunda of St. Thomas in
Lemine (St. Tomé) in Almenno S. Bartolomeo (XI Century).
VB1 The
Belle Époque in S.Pellegrino Terme (Half day).
S. Pellegrino Terme is nowadays very famous for the bottles of
mineral water exported all over the world. During the first years of this
Century, the town was a renowned resort patronized by the European
aristocracy. The Casino, the Hall of the Source, the Spa Building, the Grand
Hotel, the Colleoni Arcades, the several cafés and the private mansions testify
the grandeur of this short-lived époque. The visit to the Casino only worth the
excursion: designed by Romolo Squadrelli, with stucco-works and bas-reliefs by
Bernasconi and Vedani, chandeliers by Mazzucotelli, frescoes and paintings by
Malerba, cabinet-making works by Quarti and glass-wares by Beltrame. VB2 Harlequin
and the Venetian Routes (Half day).

Giovanni Bianco is situated right at the confluence of the rivers Brembo and
Enna (who flows in the Taleggio Valley), and boasts rich remains of the via
Mercatorum (Route of the Merchants) and of the following Route Priula, an
ancient Venetian carriage way opened at the end of 1500 to connect Venice with
Chur, city of the Graubunden Swiss Canton, to avoid to pay the duties to the
Duke of Milan. In San Giovanni Bianco do remain an arcaded stretch of the Route
Priula with the bridge crossing the river Enna and a long stretch of the via
Mercatorum between the modern village and the old countries of Oneta and
Cornello dei Tasso, medieval village fatherland of family Tasso, forerunner of
the mail services of all Europe.
In S. Giovanni Bianco visit of the church of St. John the Evangelist,
boasting the famous relic of the Holy Thorn (taken from Jesus Crown) and
paintings by Tiepolo and Ceresa, the church of Corpus Domini in Cornalita with a
frescoed portico, the parish church in Pianca with frescoes of ‘400,
wood carved and painted statues and paintings by Ceresa, the fine small church of Our
Lady of the Carmel in Oneta, with the frescoed porch (1400) and the Grataroli
House, built before 1400, known to be the birthplace of Harlequin.
VB3 San
Giovanni Bianco and Cornello dei Tasso (Full day with lunch).
In San Giovanni Bianco visit of the arcaded stretch of the
Route Priula with the bridge crossing the river Enna, the church of St. John the
Evangelist boasting the famous relic of the Holy Thorn and paintings by Tiepolo
and Ceresa, then walk (5 min. approx) on a stretch of the ancient via Mercatorum
between the modern village and the old country of Oneta to visit the small
church of Our Lady of the Carmel, with the frescoed porch (1400) and the
Grataroli House, built before 1400, known to be the birthplace of character of
Harlequin. In the outskirts of San Giovanni Bianco visit of the church of Corpus
Domini in Cornalita with a beautiful frescoed portico, the parish churches of
San Pietro d’Orzio, San Gallo and Pianca with frescoes and paintings dating
from 1400, painted wood carved figures and paintings by Ceresa, Boldrini and
Barbelli. In Cornello dei Tasso, medieval village fatherland of family Tasso,
forerunner of the mail services of all Europe, visit the Museum of the family
Tasso, the arcaded route and the church of S. Cornelio and Cipriano with
frescoes of 1400. (The village of Cornello dei Tasso is not accessible by cars
and coaches and can only be reached with a 5 minutes walk).
PB1 Clusone
and Rovetta (Half day).
Visit
of the old centre of Clusone, 34 Km from Bergamo, with the Square of the Clock
(old astronomic clock of 1583, built on the southern front of the former Town
Hall) and the Oratory of Disciplini with frescoes of late ‘400, among which
are the very famous Trionfo della Morte (Death’s Triumph) e Danza Macabra
(Macabre Dance). In Rovetta visit of the old centre and the House of Fantoni, a
museum boasting many sketches, drawings and models of the famous family of
wood-carvers and cabinet-makers. On the way back visit of the Museum of the
Hammersmiths in Ponte Nossa.
PB2 The
Workers’ Village of Crespi d’Adda (Half day).
Probably the most important example of Workers’ Village in
the world. Thanks to both the perfect preservation and the urbanism planning,
the UNESCO Committee included the Village in the World Heritage List, fifth site
set in the world for industrial archaeology. Beside the exceptional preservation
status of the buildings, the village maintains all its social and productive
roles, still housing a living community, a working factory with the hydro
electrical power plant, masterpiece of industrial archaeology. In the village,
visit of the manor of the owners, the family Crespi, the block houses for the
workers’ family, the houses of the medicine man and the priest, the
neo-renaissance church, the school, the public baths, the cooperative grocery,
the workers’ club, the brick-finished public wash-house, and the burial ground
(National Monument) dominated by the flourished mausoleum of the family Crespi.
PB3 The
Colleoni Castle of Malpaga (Half day).
The castle was built onto an existing older manor, of which
some ruins can still be seen. The castle was purchased in 1456 by Bartolomeo
Colleoni, to transfer there his court, and then transformed into the present
structure. The castle boasts a nice courtyard with two storeys frescoed arcades
(‘400 and ‘500) and a fine Honour Hall with a memorial fresco of the visit
of King Christian of Denmark.

The
Lower Serio Valley (Half day).
Visit
of Alzano Lombardo with the gothic church of the Holy Virgin and the Basilica of
St. Martin, boasting masterpieces of Tintoretto and Palma the Old, a beautiful
wood pulpit of Caniana and Fantoni and three magnificent sacristies. Than visit
of the Lujo Valley with the old Romanic church of Abbazia, founded in 1135, the
small church of the Holy Trinity in Fiobbio and the Sanctuary of Altino in
Vallalta. Going north visit of Cene, home of one of the most important
palaeontologic park of Italy (under preparation) and Vertova with the convent of
St. Patrick, hanged on a high cliff.

(the dead Christ). In Ponteranica (outskirts of Bergamo) visit of the church of

Castles of Colleoni (Full day with lunch).
Tour of the castles of Bartolomeo Colleoni starting from the
very well preserved one in Urgnano, built by family Visconti in 1354 and given
in 1465 to the Captain by the Venetians. The second castle is the one in
Cavernago with fine frescoes dating back to 1600 and built on a site of a
pre-existing family manor, and the last one is that in Malpaga, with the a nice
courtyard with two storeys frescoed arcades (‘400 and ‘500) and a fine
Honour Hall with a memorial fresco of the visit of King Christian of Denmark. GP3
